Mount Greylock State Reservation is located in the northwest corner of Massachus
etts. The Summit of Greylock is closest to the town of Adams, MA. The auto roads are open from May 14 to November 1 and lead to Mount Greylock-the highest peak in Massachusetts at 3,491 feet.
Geologically it is a part of the Taconic Mountains, but most people associate it with the Berkshire Hills due to the view from the Summit of the Berkshires. On a clear day you can see 60-90 miles and into 5 states. Mount Greylock is used extensively for its network of hiking trails including the 11.5 miles of the Appalachian Trail.
Veterans War Memorial Tower
At the Summit is the Veterans War Memorial Tower* which was constructed from 1931-32. Originally intended to honor the fallen soldiers of World War I, it is now considered a tribute to all the men and women of Massachusetts that served their state or country.
*Closed till 2017 for renovation
The roads to the summit are paved and generally in great shape. The are several blind hairpins that you must use caution on especially during busy times. You never know when that eight passenger SUV is going to be coming round right in the middle. The roads on the back side headed towards North Adams are far less busy but just as much fun. Watch out for wet leaves and pine needles. We have had a few wiggles on them.
